The impact of diet choices on cholesterol
Kiwis disregarding the impact of diet choices on cholesterol
Ministry of health statistics show approximately one in four New Zealand adults need to manage their cholesterol levels for their heart heath.
A study was carried out by Dr Jim Mann, Professor of Human Nutrition and Medicine at Otago University.
Researchers found that 4 out of 10 adults get themselves tested for cholesterol regularly, and nearly two thirds of Kiwis have high cholesterol, or know someone who has.
The survey also indicated that almost half (47%) of the respondents to the questionnaire do not consider the potential impact of their food choices on their cholesterol levels.
This means that, even though people are getting their cholesterol tested, they are not doing anything about the results, particularly if their levels are too high!
The research was commissioned by Weet-bix brand, which has recently launched a new plant-sterol fortified Weet-bix for cholesterol lowering.
Perhaps the thought is that by eating a standard kiwi breakfast of weet-bix that has been fortified with plant sterols to lower cholesterol, you can get your usual breakfast and reap some health benefits at the same time.
The message to take home is, consider the impact the food you eat has on your body, your health and most of all, your heart health. High cholesterol is not good for the heart, so keeping in touch with your HDL and LDL levels is a good thing to do, and make sure you act on the results!
Complacency can have far reaching results if you ignore warning signs!
