What to Expect A class suitable for almost everyone, with options for different levels.

Classes run for approximately 1 hour

Classes will initially be about 45-55 minutes as you learn the moves and correct techniques. As the class advances it will be more structured and will last for 1 hour. Classes may have a theme such as a workout with bands, or pilates rings or large exercise balls. Low impact to start but a cardio option will sneak in to help keep the heart rate up for those that like to work harder.

Warmup

Classes will start with a general warmup to make sure your muscles are ready to work. Movement followed by some stretching to get ready to go Up the Wall!

+

Technique

In your first few classes you will concentrate on learning the correct techniques for the movements to ensure you don’t create  incorrect movement patterns. Once these techniques are mastered, then the real fun of Up the Wall can start.

What exercises will you be doing?

Using the wall as your base you will learn the many varieties of crunches. As you gain confidence there will be add-ons to the exercises to make them more challenging. Increases in difficulty can also add to the intensity of the exercise, with some variations focused on increasing the heart rate significantly. Adding equipment to some of the exercises also adds difficulty and challenge.

But not just crunches! You will also be doing squats, lunges, planks, pushups and strength work all using the wall in some way.

+

Core emphasis

Learning to use the core for every exercise is key to good technique and posture. You will learn  where the core is and how to engage it and keep it functioning throughout the exercises.

+

Wall Pilates

A variety of Pilates themed exercises are the basis of the wall workout. How they are performed and what equipment is used will add to the variety, challenge and fun of doing the Up the Wall class.

+

Stretching

Focus on improving flexibility and stretching out those troublesome spots.

Tight quads, hip flexors, hamstrings, lower backs and hips can restrict your movements, so we work towards becoming more flexible in these areas doing work with a foam roller, also called a spine aligner. Opening the chest, getting those shoulders onto your back where they belong, and getting the spine into a good neutral position are things that can be achieved with stretching and relaxation.

Something different

Up the Wall is a class with a difference. If you are tired of the same old exercises then try this class to add a completely new dimension to your exercise routines. To add to the variety some classes will use a specific piece of equipment for the majority of the exercises. Up the Wall on the top of a large exercise ball is challenging and a lot of fun!

Adding a circle band to the ankles or feet works the legs and butt more than they may be used to. Holding a long band can challenge the upper and lower body at the same time. Lying on top of a long roller doing exercises at the wall is challenging to your balance, works the core and the brain!

I have been attending Jane’s exercise classes for about four years, twice a week. Cardio, balancing, stretching, strengthening using weights- it’s all there, but at the pace you determine to suit your fitness level.
